Farmhouse. C17 with mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Timber-framed with
painted brick infill and machine-tiled roofs. H-plan; main part of three
framed bays aligned east/west; central bay occupied by large chimney with
brick ridge stack and forming lobby-entry plan; two intersecting cross-wings
both of two framed bays at gable ends. Part two storeys, part single storey
and attic with dormers. Framing: three and four panels from sill to wall-
plate; short straight braces in some upper corners; collar and tie-beam trusses
with struts and V-strut in apex. North entrance elevation: main part has a
hipped-roofed bay window addition to left, two gabled dormers with 3-light
casements and a central entrance with gabled canopy on brackets and a C20
door; service wing gable end to left has two ground floor 3-light casements
and an attic light; cross-wing gable end at upper west end has a 2-light
ground floor casement and a 3-light first floor casement. Interior: back-
to-back fireplaces; space to south of chimney said to have once been a
priests hole. The house is believed to have once belonged to an eminent
Roman Catholic family with probable connections with the Gunpowder Plot
conspirators.
