west of Thicknall Farmhouse
GV II
Barn, stables, granary and cartshed. Late C18 with mid-C19 and mid-C20
alterations. Brick with plain tiled roofs. L-plan. Barn: five bays aligned
north/south; wagon bay situated in second bay from north end has opposed cart
entries with cambered heads and double doors. Header ventilation courses and
dentilled eaves cornice. Loft door with cambered head in south gable end.
Stable range adjoins to south-east; composed of a single-bay wing of slightly
lower height than barn with double doors to north side; attached at east end
is a two-bay building, lower in height and with a stable door and window in
its north elevation; adjoining the east end is a five-bay range, orginally a
shelter shed with archways on bullnosed brick piers; these archways have been
blocked and C20 stable doors inserted. At the east end, at right angles to
the stable range and adjacent to Thicknall Farmhouse (qv) is the anon and
cartshed: this has a hipped roof of two bays and two levels; the lower level
has square-headed archways at both north and south ends (with double doors at
road end); the upper granary level has a gabled loft door reached by external
brick steps on its east aide; also lean-to addition on east aide. This sub-
stantial contemporary range of farm buildings encloses the farmyard of Thicknall
Farmhouse (qv) to the south and west; its south elevation fronts onto Thicknall
Lane. Included for group value.
