Description

TL 4412 GILSTON GILSTON LANE
(west side)

9/3 Iron Gate and Gate piers to Park
at Gilston Park
-

- II

Iron gate. Early C19. A wide single wrought iron gate supported
on square openwork iron piers of neo-classical design with short
lengths of projecting railing on each side. The piers have cast
anthemion ornament and urns at each corner. Similar urns
terminate the flanking railings. The upper part of each pier has
crossed members with dished bosses at the intersection and at the
junctions with the main uprights. Scrolls in the lower part
support a rail of diagonal latticework topped by spearheads. A
similar lattice rail runs across the gate separating a lower part
with bars and arrows alternately from the upper part with spears
running up through the top member which is swept down in a
shallow curve to meet a curved rail arching up from the middle
rail. A delicate example of neo-classical wrought ironwork,
probably moved from the vicinity of the main house when Gothic
Gilston Park was erected by Hardwick for John Hodgson in 1852.
