C17 incorporating C16 crosswing on E. 2 storeys. Timberframe plastered
under steep old red tile roof gabled to E and W ends and with 3 large
gables to front and rear. 2 storey gabled and jettied porch in line with
large chimney stack at junction of former E crosswing with later parts to
W rising through rear slope of roof. Stack surmounted by engaged square
shafts. Jacobean well stair with bulbous pendants, moulded string and
heavy turned balusters placed between entrance door and stack. 3 rooms in
line, baffle entry plan with large internal gable stack at W end in room
one step up from hall with remains of partition between. C16 crosswing heightened
by 3 feet and under C17 longitudinal roof. It has axial close
studded partition on 1st floor and may have been service end of re-arranged
house. Gd floor extended here a little to N in C18 to accommodate a
corner fireplace. Modern single storey extension on E end. 3 window
front, flush box sashes with 6/6 and 8/8 panes. Brick plinth. Single
storey rear extension. Modern wooden windows at rear. Interior features
on Gd floor include a chamfered cross beam with ogee stops over the central
room and paired axial beams and crossbeam in front of fireplace in W room
all chamfered with stepped concave stops. On the 1st floor, the timbers
are chamfered around doorway from staircase to middle room. This door is
of oak with small scratch moulded panels and there is a similar door on
the W side of this room. The dado is of similar panelling. The fire
surround in the E wall is early C18 with swelled frieze and panelled centre
piece. Door-beside it has H hinges. W end divided axially to 2 rooms with
adjacent corner fireplaces. Stair continues to attic level with plank
doors and iron hinges carried on hooks. Framework shows windows in every
gable to front and rear, now blocked. Purlin roof original. There is no
trace of the blocked original window, nor of the 2,4-centred fireplaces
noted by the Royal Commission in 1911. (RCHM (1911) 204-5: VCH III (1912)
334). ..
