GV II*

Farmhouse. C14 aisled hall of the Swote family, altered in C17
and later. Timber frame on brick sill, white weatherboarded, N
wing plastered. Old red tile roofs. S range half-hipped, N wing
hipped.. 2-storeys T-plan house facing W with N and NW sides
rising sheer from the moat. The S range is the nave and E aisle
of the former aisled hall. 2-bays and short screens passage to S
(W aisle and service rooms to S demolished). On upper floor
there are the posts, arcade-plates and curved braces of the
aisled construction, tie-beam, arched braces and foot of crown-
post of spere-truss. Only lengthwise braces to collar purlin
remain. Large close-set joists in middle and E room of N wing on
a chamfered beam with small brackets each end (C14). Alterations
in C17 involved a floor and central chimney built in the hall and
a kitchen chimney in the N wing. West extension c1700 unheated.
Fireplace and stair of C19 with stair renewed in old turret in SE
angle, and S range weatherboarded (RCHM Typescript: RCHM (1911)
208).
