GV II

House. Early C16 open hall house, early C17 W crosswing. Timber frame on
battered brick plinth, roughcast, with steep pitched thatch roofs. A
small L-shaped house set back from road facing N, with single-storey
hall range and 1 1/2-storeys W crosswing projecting only to front. 3
windows front with an upper window in gable of crosswing. 2-lights flush
casement windows with small-panes. Plank door opposite internal C17
chimney near middle of hall range. Originally a 2 rooms house open to
roof with hearth in W room shown by thicker soot blackening of
clasped-purlin roof. 2 posts on ground floor have stopped grooves for
wattle infill. Ceiling inserted on axial beam with internal chimney in
C17 heating W room. Crosswing added to W with unheated parlour and
chamber over reached by stair in SE corner. Chamfered and stopped beam.
1st floor partly in roof with traces of big windows below tie-beam.
Clasped-purlin roof with long straight windbraces and ceiling at purlin
level. C20 addition to rear. (RCHM Typescript).
