Sluice. Late C18 - early C19. Tooled ashlar, with timber sluice gate and
iron hoist mechanism. South-west face has central tunnel arch flanked by
projecting revetment walls splayed out to each side and rising to a roadside
parapet between coped rectangular piers. Sluice gate and hoist in situ:
board gate has timber lifting bar with attached iron teeth passing through
wheeled ratchet mechanism attached at one end to the parapet and at the
other to an iron girder between the revetment walls. North-east side has
parapet; remainder obscured by later earth infill. Carries the main
A 161 road. Besides serving as a land drain, this watercouse was also used
for improving the nearby low lying farmland by warping, a process whereby
silt was deposited by controlled flooding. One of only 2 sluices in the
Axeholme - Marshland area retaining the original hoist mechanism, (the other
on the Folly Drain, Derrythorpe Road, Keadby with Althorpe parish (qv)), and
the most complete example of a warping drain sluice in the area.
