Pair of lodges with walls, gates and railings adjoining. Early C19 with
later additions and alterations. Sandstone ashlar with Welsh slate roofs
and wrought-iron gates and railings. Probably by Robert Abraham for the
Bethell family with ironwork by Watson and Pritchett of York. Lodges square
on plan between walls curved on plan approximately 5 metres long by 1.75
metres high. Double gates and railings in between the lodges. Walls have
square end piers surmounted by low pyramidal caps; piers and walls have
plinth and moulded cornice. Lodges, alike: entrance to inner return a 6-
fielded-panel door with overlight with vertical glazing bars between 8-pane
sashes with ashlar aprons. Front facade, plinth. Central recess with 12-
pane sash over ashlar apron, between 2 Ionic columns supporting continuous
frieze, cornice and blocking course. Peaked roof. Central stack. Similar
facade to rear. Gates and railings, alike: railings extend for
approximately 0.5 metres to a pedestrian gate flanked by piers, inner piers
with central double gates between. Gates and railings have bars and dogbars
surmounted by spear heads with 5 levels of rails between, those to top and
centre with hollow circles between. Ornamental iron piers.
