House, originally Hall house. c.1500, altered C17, additions C18. Timber
framed with rendered wattle and daub infill and pantiled roof. Brick plinth,
2 storeys and attic. Door left of centre with early C19 doorcase under
segmental hood leads to original screens passage. Jettied hall to right with
full height gabled cross wing. 2 early C19 tripartite sashes to ground floor
with glazing bars and 4 timber cross casements to first floor with leaded
lights. Moulded coved jetty and coved eaves cornice below gabled roof. C18
casement in cross wing gable. One sash window with glazing bars to left of
door and 2 to first floor added when this service end altered C18. Brick
west gable wall, C18 sash windows and C20 dormer in hipped roof. Moulded
eaves cornice. 2 C17 ridge stacks. C20 brick east gable with C20 gabled
single storey extension. Roof slope at rear continues down to cover C18
additions under catslide roof enclosing projection of cross gable. Cross
wing studding exposed on first floor, the gable head brick filled and pierced
by one 5-light diamond mullioned window. Weatherboarded and gabled C18
extension abuts cross wing to left at first floor above hipped C20 extension.
C20 fenestration to service end. Interior. C19 staircase inserted into screens
passage. Timber framing of heavy scantling with middle rails. One 4-centred
arched service door into hall, which has C17 re-used bridging beam. Most
roofing replaced C18, originally crown post over hall : crown purlin and 1
arched brace survive in east; clasped purlins to collars above and butt purlins
below in west half. Cross wing retains single crown post with arched braces
to purlin only.
