10/9 Barn, Stable and Granary,
Birdwood House

Barn, stable and granary; early C19 or late C18, Flemish bond
brickwork to barn, on random rubble plinth, bricks yellowy, but
every fourth course red: wings at each end random rubble. Double
roman tiles at roof, except stable, corrugated asbestos. 'L' plan:
barn, with lower wings in line each end, and a short return stable
end. Barn: central, double doors in heavy timber frame, stops just
below eaves, now faced metal sheets. To left 2 rows of 2 slit air
vents, similar to right but one replaced by boarded door.
Internally 3 bays; right side inserted loft. Air vents wider
inside. Tie-beam truss with angle struts and collar: 2 pairs butt-
jointed purlins. Long wind braces cutting rafters. Building to
left 2-storey, boarded stable door on left, with small, shuttered
opening against barn on right. Left return boarded door at far
end: first floor central door, part in gable, with 2-light wooden
window on left, an iron bar in each light. Lower room has short,
planted timber on underside floor above with socket, possibly for
cider mill. Upper floor granary, walls and sloping ceiling
plastered: probably had timber steps up to door originally. To
right of barn, lower wing, boarded door at far end: blocked windows
in the other 2 external walls : beams supporting loft floor over
remain. At right angles a single-storey wing, with boarded door on
right, one tie-beam truss, single window in back wall: originally
for livestock. All small doors in timber-frames, without a lintel.
Barn, stable and granary appear to be of same date, single-storey
wing added later.
