Carriage and pedestrian gateway; flanking walls and piers. Early
C18; flanking walls are mid Cl9. By William Edney, blacksmith of
Bristol for Sir John Guise at Rendcomb. Wrought iron; lias
flanking walls. Central carriage gateway with flanking fixed
panels and outer single-leaf pedestrian gates; curved flanking
walls terminated by piers. 3 pairs of open-work piers, one within
the other, of increasing size, all mounted on stone bases; inner 2
pairs with scroll-work; all topped by cyma moulded cornice and
open-work urn-shaped finials on scrolled pedestals. Carriage gates
have fern leaf cartouche in upper panel; fixed scrolled frame with
cornice continuing from inner piers providing base of scrolled
overthrow which includes monogram surmounted by swan badge of Guise
family. Ball finials to flanking wall piers, each with Celtic
cross. Wall continues to right of gateway, is terminated by stone
pier with ball finial, and surmounted by iron railings. Gateway
was removed from Rendcomb and re-erected here in early C19. (D.
