Two pedestal tombs, one ledger slab and one headstone. Limestone.
(a) Circular pedestal tomb. To John Gardiner, Clothier, 1793. Lofty moulded
capping to moulded edge over embellished frieze with inscription: 'IN MEMORY
OF/THE UNDER WRITTEN/WHOSE REMAINS/........NTERRED', all supported by four
richly modelled scrolls to moulded base. Sunk moulded curved panels. Set on a
platform in Greek cross form, carrying four engraved plates to other members of
the family. An unusual form of brilliant execution.
(b) Hexagonal pedestal tomb. To Thomas Parker, 1767. Pyramidal top to moulded
edge over plain frieze and simple raised panels to segmental heads, moulded base
and set to rectangular stone platform. Remains of lettering to south side.
Parker was aged 86 at death, his wife 84.
(c) Headstone. C18. A large stone with cambered top. Two cherubs above an
elliptical panel flanked by husk and floral drops.
(d) Ledger slab with engraved plate, immediately west of the preceding. Slab
set level with ground carries a good brass plate in the form of an open book, to
Thomas Parker of Sheepscombe who died in 1740, aged 100.
The earliest plate, adjoining the John Gardiner monument, is to David Gardiner,
who dies in 1712, aged 60.
