GV II*
Cockpit with dovecote. Early C19. Coursed rubble limestone;
asbestos slate roof. Octagonal. Large round arched opening to
each face. Three with small-paned fixed light, others blocked.
Large plank doors with timber lintel on north side added after
cessation of cockpit use. Plinth with thin projecting string
course. Low-pitched hipped roof with projecting eaves on paired
brackets. Central octagonal dovecote lantern, rendered with round
arched opening on 2 faces. Interior: present board floor covers
original cockpit. As entry level is well above the pit it can be
assumed that a viewing platform ran round the periphery - no trace
of this remaining. Despite these alterations, a rare survival of a
purpose-built cockpit, probably built for Captain Hamstead who is
said to have created new outbuildings and landscaped gardens
between 1811 and 1813.
