5/124 The Old Millhouse

GV II

Former pub, then mill house. Late C16; altered C18. Coursed
squared and dressed limestone; close-studded timber framing with
painted stone infill; painted C18 brick; concrete tile roof; one
early and one C20 brick stack. Two storeys with single-storey
extensions. Rectangular main body with extensions to either gable
end. Flat-roofed extension to rear not of special interest. Main
body 2 storeys with 1½ storey and single-storey extension.
Entrance front from left to right: wide possibly C14 four-centred
arched opening now blocked, C20 three-light casement to the right;
C20 plank door and 3-light casement with timber lintel; partially
blocked window now with 2-light casement far right. Painted brick
first floor, probably formerly timber framed, lit by two 2-light
C19 wooden casements and a similar 4-light casement all with
horizontal glazing bars. Close-studded timber framing exposed at
the left gable end; right gable end rendered with two-light C20
oriel. Single-light window with a dressed stone surround, now
blocked with C18 brick to rear; straight joint indicating possible
position of former doorway, now blocked with window inserted in
blocking, in line with blocked arch on roadside front; former
stable to right now a garage. Square-panelled timber framing with
early brick infill to the right gable end of the single-storey
extension. C18 projecting gable end stack now incorporated within
the stable and C20 off-the-ridge stack.
Interior: narrow intersecting beams with deep flat chamfers; open
fireplace with bressumer; inglenook fireplace with early wooden
seat in situ; crane and niche. C20 staircase. First floor:
beams with triangular stops; early door with large wooden lock
with incised decoration. Formerly the Harrow alehouse.
