4/29 Primary School
GV II
1859, by William White, 1903, and later. Built as a National School, the group of
buildings has 3 attached parts, comprising 2 houses for the schoolmaster and
schoolmistress, with the Boys School on the north side and the Girls and Infants on
the south. The whole has a Gothic (Butterfield) style, with steep roofing, pointed
arches, and multicoloured banded brickwork. An L-shaped block, set forward from the
houses and having an extension of 1903 at the rear. Modern steep tiled roof, with
tapered chimney set against a gable, and a gable to the projecting extension at the
north side. The red brick walling in English bond has a series of flush blue bands.
Two flush bands with yellow and red headers between blue courses, one buttress,
plinth. The gable has coupled lancets with multicoloured voussoirs, a cusped pane
above rectangular lights; other windows are tall rectangles under a continuous head
beam. The later, larger extension repeats the banding of the walling and has sash
windows.
