Built circa 1133 inside the walls of the Roman fort when Henry I founded a small
priory of Augustinian Canons who moved to Southwick soon afterwards. Restored
in 1710 by Queen Anne's Bounty and again in 1888. Originally cruciform, south
transept now missing. Short tower at crossing with pyramidal roof. Exterior rendered.
Old tiled roof. Aisle less nave with 4 round arched recessed Norman windows, Transept has 1 window with another above. Norman west window tanked by round arched panels filled with design of quatrefoils within circles. Fine Norman west doorway of 3 orders. Inside, arm of Elizabeth I and Queen Anne (whose body rested in the
Church in 1710). Arcading round part of walls. Squint in north wall near chancel
arch.
Portchester Castle forms a group with St Mary's Church, the Churchyard walls, the
Iamp in the churchyard and the Lychgate.
