1/102 Smalls Farmhouse
(formerly listed as
20.10.54 Great Baynden Farmhouse)
GV II
House. C16, altered and extended C17 with possibly earlier core. Timber framed and
clad with red brick in English bond on main elevation with some blue headers, and
rear elevations tile hung on first floor. Stone dressings and plain tiled roof.
Possible hall house origin, now in an extended irregular plan. Principal elevation of
2 storeys and attic on plinth of red brick to right and sandstone to left with
sandstone quoins to left. Ripped roof with gablets with stack to rear centre left
(in English Bond) and to rear centre. Hipped dormer. Three 3 light ovolo and fillet
moulded mullioned and transomed windows on each floor and rib and stud door to
centre right. Parallel wing projecting to rear right, with outshots and projecting
gabled rear wings, the present main entry being via a boarded door in a central
pentice between these two wings. Interior: The right hand of these two wings is said
to be the earliest in the house, although the small panel framing and staggered
purlin roof appear no earlier than the C16. Main range with much C17 small panel
wainscotting, probably inserted late C19/early C20, ovolo moulded beams and with
stone four-centred arched fireplaces on both floors. Hasted notes that the house had
been a Gentleman's seat under the name of Baynden, (Vol. V, 312).
