8/49 Smelt mill chimney

GV II

Lead smelting mill chimney. Probably early C19; for 3rd Earl of Darlington.
Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings. Very tall, tapered round
chimney with cornice and blocking course. Shouldered head to low opening on
east; blocked rectangular opening on west about 2 metres above ground level
has probably had corbelled head under flat stone lintel. Interior: stone-
lined except for yellow brick barrel vault to tunnel from east opening.
