II*
Single-track road bridge across the River Tees. Probably C15, rebuilt in mid
C17; end sections of parapets partly rebuilt 1983-4. Dressed sandstone.
2 wide round arches with flush voussoirs: north side of west arch slightly
pointed; east arch of greater span. Central massive pier with triangular-plan
cutwaters on both faces rising to form pedestrian refuges. Flat parapet,
defined by band at road level and chamfered coping stones, has raked-down,
splayed ends.
