Description

TL 74 SW ASHEN THE STREET, East Side
1/7 The Old Rectory

GV II

House, early C19. Gault brick, slate roof. Originally an almost symmetrical
plan, aligned approx. N-S, aspect W, with central entrance hall, axial chimney
stack on S side of it, and external chimney stack on N wall. Extended to N
soon after construction, with chimney stack in N wall. 2 storeys. The original
building has a central door with 4 glazed panels in recessed porch with stucco
pilasters and architrave, and 3-window range of double-hung sashes of 12 lights
with cast-iron lintels. Hipped roof of low-pitch. The N extension has a 2-
window range of double-hung sashes of 16 lights with similar cast-iron lintels,
and a hipped roof of normal slate pitch, steeper than the original roof. The
E (garden) elevation is similar except that the original part has french windows
each of 16 lights, and the ground-floor windows of the N extension are
tripartite double-hung sashes of 4-12-4 lights. All the windows in both
elevations are original, and most of the panes are of crown glass. The only
external alterations are that the N wall has been rendered, and there is an
external stair on it with glazed sides and corrugated asbestos roof, C20. The
cast iron lintels are of particular historical interest, and are rare. One
at the rear of the original house bears the date 1835. J. McCann: Antique
Ironwork - cast iron windows and fanlights, Period Home, October/November 1982,
