House. C16 or earlier, altered in C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. 2 bays facing SE, with axial stack at left end, and
one-bay extension beyond, connecting with No. 2 River Hill Cottages. C19
external stack at rear, enclosed by lean-to extension along whole rear
elevation, forming a catslide roof. 2 storeys. 2-window range of C20
casements. C20 door. Exposed imitation framing on upper part of front wall and
right gable. Chamfered binding beam, plain joists of horizontal section
arranged longitudinally. Heavy arched braces of left girt or binding beam.
Left tiebeam cambered. On first floor, 2 unglazed windows at rear, now enclosed
by lean-to, one complete with diamond mullions and shutter groove, the other
blocked. No access to roof. This building is of unusual type, and may be the
remaining part of a larger house, or a non-domestic building originally, such as
a granary, later converted to a house. RCHM18.
