Claypit Hall Farmhouse
II
House. C16 and C17, altered in C18 and C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed
with handmade red clay tiles. 2-bay hall range aligned approx. N-S, C16, and
entrance/stair hall to S. 4-bay crosswing to S with central stack, early C17,
forming a lobby-entrance house of L-plan. Stair tower in left rear angle, early
C17. C18 extension to left of rear bay of hall range, and C19 single-storey
extension with slate roof to rear of it. Front range of 2 storeys and attics,
hall range of 2 storeys. Ground floor, 2 early C19 sashes of 16 lights. First
floor, 2 similar sashes and one of 12 lights. Central 6-panel door in moulded
doorcase with shallow hood on scrolled brackets, early C19. Front range has a
gambrel roof, half-hipped at both ends. The right return wall has 2 C17/C18 3-
light windows, each with a wrought iron casement and early glass, and 2 C19
horizontally sliding sashes of 12 lights. The rear elevation has an C18 2-light
window with one wrought iron casement. The interior of the hall range has a
chamfered axial beam with plain joists of square section supported on pegged
clamps, and a rebuilt roof. The front range has chamfered axial beams with
lamb's tongue stops over ground and first floors. The stair tower has an
original octagonal newel post terminating in a square knob.
