House. Circa 1700, altered in late C19 Tudor Revival style, extended in C20.
Timber framed with some exposed imitation framing, roughcast rendered, roofed
with handmade red plain tiles. 3 bays aligned E-W (gable end to road) with
central stack. Late C19 and C20 single-storey extensions to N, forming an
irregular T-plan, and C20 porch extension at NW corner. 2 storeys. W elevation
(to Rectory Road), ground floor, 2 C19 casements of 6 and 9 lights respectively;
first floor, one C19 square oriel of 3-9-3 lights with hipped roof. Imitation
framing of straight geometrical pattern, fretted bargeboards with carved finial
and pendant, all C19. S elevation, ground floor, 2 C19 square bays of casements
of 3-9-3 lights with hipped roofs; first floor, 2 C19 casements of 6 lights and
one C20 casement. C20 door. Plain stack. 2 chamfered transverse beams with
lamb's tongue stops, joists plastered to the soffits. 2 C20 grates in central
stack. One internal tiebeam, boxed in. Face-halved and bladed scarf in N
wallplate. Frame mainly concealed by internal and external plaster, but there
are indications that the walls have been raised approximately 1.50 metres. Main
range only shown on tithe map of 1839 (Essex Record Office, D/CT 355). The
external architectural treatment is similar to that of several other houses in
Stisted, particularly in The Street, carried out for Onley Savill Onley in the
period 1860-80.
