House. C17, extended in C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays facing E (at right-angles to road) with central
stack, of one storey with attics. C19 2-storey extension to right. C20 lean-to
extension to rear of original house, roofed with slate (replacing similar but
lower C18/C19 extension). Ground floor, 2 late C19 sashes with marginal lights,
and one C20 casement. First floor, 3 similar late C19 sashes, of which 2 are in
gabled dormers. C20 door. Roof half-hipped at left end. Chamfered axial
beams, with lamb's tongue stops in right bay only. 2 wood-burning hearths of
0.23 metre brickwork, blocked in left bay. Cambered tiebeams. The framing of
the dormers indicates that they are original. This house is first recorded,
under the present name, in a deed of 1696 (Essex Record Office, D/DHn T4).
