II
Farmhouse, how house. Mid/late C16 with later Cl7 alterations. Restored
1988. Weatherboard over timber frame: left gable end has close studding,
with angle bracing to tie beams; elsewhere, the cill plates, wall plates, main
posts and trusses survive; C20 brick infill. Gabled old tile roof; brick
ridge stack, with diagonally-set shaft. 3-unit plan: C17 house had open hall
flanked by service bay to right and parlour to left. Aligned east-west with
west bay to left. One storey and attic; 3-window range. Two C20 doors and
C20 windows; large central dormer installed 1988. Interior: 3-bay
collar-truss roof with clasped purlins and jowled posts with angle braces to
tie beams; split oak common rafters to central and right-hand bays.
Close-studded partition between these bays with downward-curved passing braces
and doorway to front; wattle and daub infill to truss above. Right-end wall
retains close studding between tie beam and middle rail. An unsually late
example of an open hall house, which had its floor inserted in the late
C17/early C17: jointing techniques support mid/late C16 date.
