red brick, stretcher bond, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 5 bays aligned
approx. N-S with midstrey to E of central bay. Single-storey lean-to extension
in SE angle, of red brick, stretcher bond, roofed with C20 red clay Roman tiles,
1983. External chimney stack at N end, 1983. Large windows to W, 1983. Timber
frame partly exposed internally. Heavy studding, primary straight tension
braces combined with arched braces to wallplates, an unusual structure. Edge-
halved and bridled scarfs in wallplates. Jowled posts, arched braces to
straight tiebeams, inclined queen posts shaped to decorative jowled profile at
the tops, a rare feature. Clasped purlins with straight wind bracing. Extra
posts on the W side of the middle'bay indicate that originally there were large
double doors here, now infilled and weatherboarded. Empty mortices on the E
side indicate that the midstrey has been added after initial construction. In
the conversion to a house, approaching completion in July, 1983, the 2 S bays
have been divided into 2 storeys, the middle bay is open to the roof, the 2 N
bays have been ceiled at first floor level, without access to the upper floor.
