4/19 The Thatch
II
Cottage, late C17/early C18, extended in C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered,
roof thatched. Originally of 2 bays aligned approximately NE-SW with chimney
stack at NE end. Extended to NE in early C19 to form 2 cottages, later
combined. External chimney stack at each end, C19. Single-storey lean-to
extension beyond each, C19, roofed with handmade red clay plain tiles to SW,
C19 red clay pantiles to NE. Wash-house extension in middle of NW elevation
with end chimney stack, C19, roofed with C20 corrugated tiles. Other lean-to
and flat-roofed extensions to each side of it, C20. Single storey with attics.
SE elevation, tiled lean-to porch, 8 casement windows, all C20, 4 more in swept
dormers of rectangular form. Some framing exposed internally. In SW cottage,
central tiebeam with straight braces, fully jointed and pegged, and later
inserted floor with chamfered axial beam. Equivalent floor in NE cottage
original, axial beam unchamfered. C19 cast iron grate in NE upper room.
