House formerly Croft House Academy for boys. Early C19 with additions c1840.
Stucco walls with raised painted quoins, graduated slate roofs, stucco and brick
chimney stacks. Recessed centre of 2 storeys, 3 bays, with projecting gabled
extensions of 2 storeys, single bay left, 2½ storeys 2 bays right. Windows all
sashes with glazing bars, moulded stone surrounds. Joseph Coulthard started his
academy in 1840; many famous pupils including Thomas Ismay, founder of the
White Star Line, and Sir William Stephenson, Lord Mayor of Newcastle.
