2/5 Pair of Limekilns
- About 300 metres south-west of
Chercombe Bridge
- II
Pair of disused limekilns heavily overgrown with trees and creeper, on the east
side of the road from Chercombe Bridge. Late C18 or early C19. Stone with brick
detail. Cylindrical, the larger kiln to north with openings on north and south
sides, the smaller kiln to south with a single opening on West. The openings in
the northern kiln are shaped like an inverted U with splayed feet, the apexes of
the arches being of brick. Chambers inside the openings have corbelled stone
vaults, while the small apertures into the central pit have segmental brick arches.
The northern opening has in its west wall a small square recess about one metre
from the ground. The southern kiln differs in having an opening with a segmental
brick arch. A large hole has been knocked in the rear wall of the chamber, through
into the pit.
