(Formerly listed as Orchard House)

GV II
House in use as restaurant. Late C18/early C19, late C20 alterations stone rubble,
colourwashed and rendered; slate roof; end stacks, axial stacks.
The original plan has been obscured by C20 alterations, but the main range appears to
have had a passage, right of centre. A rear wing, at right angles to the main range
was probably a service wing.
2 storeys and attic. Asymmetrical 4 window front with C20 flat-roofed porch in the
first bay from the right flanked by 12-pane sashes, cart entrance at the left end
with a canted bay window to the right of the entrance. The bay has a dentil cornice,
an 8 pane sash in the centre and 2 pane sashes to the returns. 4 first floor 12-pane
sashes, 4 first floor attic dormers.
Interior Good circa late C18 stair with turned balusters and ramped handrail first
floor Adam style chimneypiece.
The dentil frieze under the eaves and doorhood referred to in the 1952 list
description no longer exist.
The house was owned in the mid C19 by Dr Terry, who had theatrical interests and ran
a musical academy which gave rise to the legend (unfounded) that Ellen Terry spend
her childhood here.
