2/72 Row of 4 cottages including Rose
- Cottage and Jasmine Cottage and
Howell Cottage attached to south
east
GV II
Row of 4 cottages with attached cottage at south-east end. C17 through to C18,
probably of slightly varying builds. Rendered rubble walls. Hipped scantle slate
roof, Howell Cottage has gable ended slate roof. 4 substantial rendered rubble
stack; that to Howell Cottage is a gable end one. Stack at either end of row with
axial stack to left of centre that appears to have 2 builds.
Row of 4 cottages originally likely to have been single depth 1 room plan cottages
built back to back although possibly not all the the same time. Howell Cottage is
of a separate build, probably circa late C17/early C18, also 1 room plan.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical east front. Rose Cottage to right end has 2 window front
of early C20 3-light casements with glazing bars. C20 plank door to right under
heavy slate porch hood. Green Valley Cottage at centre has C20 plank door to left
under porch hood with 3-light early C20 casement to right and 2-light above door
both with glazing bars. Jasmine Cottage to the far left has C20 2-light casements
with glazing bars on ground and first floor, door is on opposite side. Howell
Cottage projects at right angles from the left-hand side and has a 1 window front of
late C20 3-light casements with glazing bars and C19 plank door to right under porch
hood.
Interior of Rose Cottage and Green Valley Cottage inspected. Rose Cottage shows C18
features such as insubstantial rough beams and 2 fireplaces in the principal room
suggesting that it was formerly 2 cottages. One of these has a rough stone arch and
the other a plain timber one. Green Valley Cottage has a C17 fireplace with
chamfered wooden lintel which has hollow step stops. Roof space not inspected.
These cottages preserve a traditional and attractive external appearance.
