Description

TALATON
SY 09 NE
6/166 Higher Westcott Farmhouse
-
GV II

Farmhouse. Late C17 - early C18 (maybe earlier origins), refurbished in mid C19.
Flemish bond brick, most is late C17 - early C18 local handmade red brick with
decorative burnt headers but the front has been refaced with C19 brick; brick stacks
and chimneyshafts; thatch roof.
Plan: the house faces south. It has a 2 or 3-room plan with entrance hall at the
left (west) end. The room alongside has an axial stack backing onto the entrance
hall and there is a right gable-end stack. Since no internal inspection was
available at the time of this survey it is not possible to determine details of the
layout of any structural development of the house. 2 storeys with integral lean-to
out-shots and C19 lean-to outshot on left end.
Exterior: irregular 4-window front of C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars.
Front doorway at the left end contains a C19 6-panel door under a contemporary flat-
roofed hood on shaped raking struts. Main roof is half-hipped to left and gable-
ended to right.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this surey but is said to
contain "old beams" and the like. A good interior is suspected here and therefore
an internal inspection should be undertaken before any alterations lest early
carpentry or joinery features are destroyed. It may even have C16 or early C17
origins.
