Description

YARCOMBE
ST 21 SE
4/172 The Old Thatch (Birch Cottage on
- OS)
- II
House, formerly 2 cottages. Early C19, renovated circa 1970. Plastered local stone
rubble; stone rubble stack topped with C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: the house has been made by uniting a pair of contemporary 2-room cottages.
Each was a mirror plan of the other either side of a central axial stack serving
back-to-back fireplaces. Each cottage had a larger inner heated room and small
unheated end room. Circa 1970 the 2 cottages were united and new rear lobby
entrance created. The front doorways were blocked and the partition between the 2
rooms of the former right cottage were united. 2 storeys with outshot on the left
(east) end.
Exterior: the main house has a regular 4-window front of C20 casements with glazing
bars and there are low thatch eyebrows over the first floor windows. The roof is
hipped each end. There is a front doorway containing a C20 door into the lean-to
outshot (now the kitchen) at the left end. Rear elevation has a similar 4-window
front with circa 1970 central doorway behind a contemporary gabled porch.
Interior: has plain carpentry detail. The main crossbeams have narrow chamfers
with runout stops. Both fireplace have been relined but both have chamfered oak
lintels with runout stops. Roof not inspected.
