7/141 Lych gate to churchyard of Church
- of St Mary
GV II
Lych gate. Circa 1875. Local stone and flint rubble with Hamstone ashlar
dressings; red tile roof with crested ridgetiles. The lych gate has stone walls
each side with weathered offsets each end. Also each end are pairs of corbels which
support the moulded oak wall plate. The tall and steeply pitched roof is supported
by outer arch-braced truss. These are closed above collar level with studs and
panels, the panels carved with Perpendicular tracery. The roof is surmounted by
wrought iron cross. There are oak double gates. The outer stiles have fleur-de-lys
finials and the inner stiles have scrolled finials. The panel above the lock bar
rail has a diagonal brace with cusped arcades above and below. Below the lock bar
rail is a herringbone arrangement of diagonal boards.
The lych gate is recessed from the road. Either side low stone rubble quadrant
walls curve outwards to square-section terminal piers with Hamstone pyramid caps.
