Description

SY 19 NE OFFWELL OFFWELL

3/106 Thatch

GV II

Cottage. Probably C18 (maybe late C17), modernised circa 1950. Partly plastered,
partly colour-washed. Local stone and flint rubble; stone rubble stack topped with
C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: 2-room plan cottage facing south-west and built down the hillslope. The
smaller room at the left downhill (north-west) end is unheated. The right room has
a large projecting gable-end stack. Now a stair rises between the 2 rooms but
originally there was probably a through passage here. Secondary outshots. to rear
have been brought into domestic use. Main cottage is 2 storeys.
Exterior: nearly symmetrical 2-window front of circa 1980 PVC windows with
rectangular leaded patterns; the first floor ones have low thatch eyebrows over.
Central doorway contains a C20 plank door behind a contemporary thatch-roofed porch
on rustic posts. The main roof is hipped to left and gable-ended to right.
Interior: is mostly the result of C20 modernisation work. What little carpentry
that is exposed is plain. The fireplace is blocked by a C20 grate but its large
size is evident. Roof not exposed.
Thatch forms part of a group of attractive thatch-roofed cottages with Beckside
Cottage and Ropley (q.v) and Thatchcote (q.v). >
