Built between 1670 and 1703, a highly remarkable classical building of
the date with contemporary staircases and the bookcases presented by Samuel
Pepys. The West front is ashlar faced, the rest brick with stone dressings.
3 storeys, attic and cellar. Main five-bay frontage. Tiled roof. Central
open arcade with five semi-elliptical arches with, Doric, Roman Doric and
Ionic pilasters. The entablature has painted 'Bibliotheca Pepysiana, 1724',
the date the library was moved there and not of the building. There are
two open staircases on either side of the arcade. The interior was altered
in the C19 but still contains two original staircases and a fireplace surround.
There are also C18 doors and panelling, and other features from the C18
and C19. The Pepy's Library contains his twelve bookcases of 1666, with
his books, and his writing desk. (RCHM)
