1826-1831. T Rickman and Hutchinson, architects.
A three-sided court of tall Gothic Revival buildings, closed on the fourth
side by an open cloister and gateway. The structure is conceived in the
highly romantic manner of the time. White brick, faced in stone with slate
roofs. Four storey blocks, battlemented and pinnacled. The Gatehall has
a fan vault with a large octangonal pendant. The cloister-walk is of seven
bays on either side of the gatehouse. The interior retains many of its
original features including ribbed plaster ceilings of Gothic Type. (RCHM.)
