Dixon's Almshouses

Six almshouses: 1868 by J.Oldrid Scott in memory of James Dixon of
Littleton. Timber framed on ashlar red sandstone plinth. Red tile
roof and 5 ashlar -chimneys. Tudor style. Long rectangular plan. 1
and 2-storey, symmetrical, 6-bay front. Tall rectangular timber
panels, the upper ones with delicate geometric pargetting. 4-light
wood-mullioned windows with pierced quatrefoil or intersecting
tracery. The 2nd and 5th bays have gabled 2-storey porches open to
the ground floor with heavily carved spandrels. These have 4-centred
arched entrances, with carved spandrels, flanked by cusped lights.
Similar 4-light windows in the upper storey. There is a memorial
plaque on the left hand one, a biblical quotation on the right. To
the rear are 3 1-storey projections containing entrances and a
verandah on wooden posts.
Interior: Not inspected.
A good, early example of Victorian timber framing with a vernacular
feel, particularly to the rear.
