Description

SJ 97 SE MACCLESFIELD FOREST C.P. ANKERS LANE
(North Side)

5/90 Milestone 210m,
north-west of Torgate
Farm.

II

Milestone: c1750. Triangular sectioned ashlar sandstone block with a
shaped head. Inscriptions becoming illegible through exfoliation and
probable deliberate erasure but east face can still be read as "To
Macclesfield 5 miles" and west face "To London 165 miles".

One of a group of milestones on the old Macclesfield-Buxton turnpike
of 1750. There are 2 others in Macclesfield Forest (q.v.). The
stones were probably erased when the new turnpike was built in 1821.
