5/295 Tredis House with attached
barn and wall

23.1.68 II

House with attached barn. and wall. Probably mid C17 origin, enlarged and altered
mid-late C18; early C19 addition to rear left, said to be a toll house, with later
C19 wing to rear connecting the house to a barn, probably of C18 origin; wall
attached to barn probably of same date as toll house. C20 alterations. Slatestone
rubble, front rendered, hipped slate roof. The original range has a rear lateral
stack heating the lower end and the original hall; the C18 addition has gable end of
the wing, and a brick gable end stack to gable end at right side. Original inner
room heated by gable end stack.
3-room and through passage plan, with lower end to left heated by rear lateral stack,
hall to right heated by rear lateral stack and inner room to end right heated by
gable end stack. Circa mid C18, a 2-storey wing of 2-room plan was added to the
front of the upper end, with stair inserted in the rear room; rear room heated by
stack to side and front end room heated by gable end stack. In the early C19 an
addition of one-room plan'was made to the rear of the lower end; this is said to have
been a toll house. Later in the C19 a 2-storey addition of one-room plan was made to
the rear of the upper end, to connect this to a barn to the rear of the house. The
barn has a short wall attached to the front gable end, formerly with matching wall on
the opposite side of the' road, originally forming a gateway across the road for the
toll house. There is a small single storey addition of one-room plan to the front of
the hall, possibly of late C17, of unknown function. In the C20, the trellis
verandah along the inner side of the C18 addition was removed and alterations made to
windows and internal partition walls. The door to the front of the through passage
has been blocked and a new entrance formed in the front gable end of the C18 wing.
2-storeys, with original range to left and C18 wing projecting to front right,
original position of front passage door concealed by render. Range to left has two
2-light casements at ground floor, with pointed arches and Gothic hexagonal cast iron
glazing; two 2-light raking dormers, with similar glazing, central single light under
eaves, above position of original passage door. Single storey rubble addition in
angle with front wing, with C20 double glazed doors and single raking dormer. 2-
storey wing to right has; 2 C20 French windows with Gothic overlights, central C20 8-
pane light; 3 raking dormers, each with pointed arched casement and flat head. The
front gable end of the wing has external stack with shaped top, C20 panelled door
with overlight; at first floor a 3-light casement with Gothic glazing. The gable end
wall of the lower end to left is in painted rubble, with single pointed arched
casement at ground floor and blocked slit window under eaves. Attached to rear left,
the single storey toll house has chamfered wall, 2-light Gothic casement with
cambered brick head at front and side, gable end brick stack and C20 plate-glass
window and porch to outer side. To the rear, the later C19 2-storey wing is in
sandstone rubble, with half-glazed door and blocked door with 6-pane light inserted,
all with segmental heads, two 12-pane sashes at first floor. The rear of the house
has rendered rear lateral stack to lower end and rear passage door in C20 porch;
external rear lateral stack to hall. The barn at the end of the C19 wing is in mixed
slatestone and sandstone.rubble with hipped slate roof; gable end to road has wide
entrance, left (outer) side has external stair to double doors. Attached to the
gable end front of the barn is a slatestone rubble wall, about 1 metre and 40
centimetres high and about 3 metres long, in an arc; there are 5 small triangular
recess to the outer side and one to the toll house side, lined with slate, and said
to be for lights. There was formerly a gateway across the road with a matching range
of wall on the other side.
Interior much altered in the C20. The gable end fireplace in the C18 wing is in
granite, with flat head, hollow-chamfered, probably re-sited. To rear of wing, C18
dog-leg stair, with panelling and pilasters to sides. In the lower end, the rear
lateral fireplace has oven recess to right and left. 2 steps up to former hall to
right, partition wall between hall and former passage.
