Description

PELYNT
SX 15 NE
1/156 Talehay Farmhouse and barn
- adjoining on east

GV II
Farmhouse and barn adjoining. Farmhouse circa early C17. Rear wing added in circa
early C18. Stone rubble with slate roof with gable ends. Gable ended rear wing
added at lower end. Rendered projecting stone rubble chimney stack in gable at lower
end and projection stone rubble rear lateral chimney stack with C20 brick shaft at
higher end. Projecting stone rubble chimney stack with shaft removed in gable end of
rear wing.
Existing plan of 2 rooms of roughly equal size with probably widened through passage.
The higher end is heated by a rear lateral chimney stack and the lower end by a gable
end stack. Stair projection at lower side of passage rear doorway. Stair removed
and C19 stair inserted into probably widened through passage. Heated rear, probably
parlour wing added in circa early C18 at lower end to form overall 'L' shaped plan.
The reduced window to the lower room on the front elevation together with the wide
through passage may indicate that the present plan has been considerably altered and
that Talehay may have once had a 3 room and through passage plan with a hall (now the
lower room) heated by an axial stack which backed on to a passage; the passage and
lower end demolished and a barn built in their place; the C19 stair inserted in the
inner room and the higher end extended.
2 storeys asymmetrical 3-window front. Ground floor with C20 window to left and C19
3-light casement to right of central C19 panelled door. Late C19/C20 glazed gabled
porch. Slate strings above ground floor windows. First floor with 3 C20 windows
asymmetrically placed.
Interior ceiling beams renewed. C20 chimney pieces. C19 stair in side of through
passage with through passage retained. Plan intact. First floor ceilings sealed.
Roof timbers not inspected.
Barn circa early C19 adjoining on right-hand lower gable end. Stone rubble and cob
with concrete block repairs. Corrugated iron roof with gable ends. 2 storeys.
Asymmetrical with plank door on ground floor and further part glazed C20 door to
right.
Interior of barn not inspected.
