Description

SY 09 SW ROCKBEARE ALLERCOMBE

3/106 Middle Allercombe Farmhouse
ll.11.52 (formerly listed as Farmhouse on SW
corner of crossroads and farm building:
GV II adjoining forming a Courtyard)

Farmhouse. Early C17, probably enlarged in late C18 or C19. Plastered cob on
stone rubble footings, stone rubble or cob stacks topped with C19 brick; thatch
roof.
4-room plan house facing north-east. The central entrance hall and rooms either
side may comprise the early C17 house. Certainly the right (north-western) end is
addition. There are axial (maybe original end) stacks between each of the central
and outer rooms. The fronts of both outer rooms are hidden by farmbuildings
projecting at right angles which enclose the cobbled farm forecourt. Farmhouse is 2
storeys.
Symmetrical 2-window front arrangement of late C19 2-light casemetns, each light 15
panes on the ground floor and 12 on the first. Contemporary 4-panel door. A small
third window to right over secondary plank door. Roof is hipped to left, steps down
by the right chimney stack to a lower level over right end roof with hipped roof
containing an end dormer. The rear elevation appears less regular but at the time
of survey much was covered by tarpaulins.
Interior: only limited access was possible at time of survey. The inner right room
has early C17 cross and half beams, soffit-chamfered with urn-late step stops. The
large fireplace here was cob but the sides are rebuilt with C19 brick and the oak
lintel is covered over. It also contains a C19 brick and cast iron oven under the
earth. The other rooms were not inspected. The roof is thought to include original
A-frame trusses.
Good and little-modernised farmhouse.
