Description

SW 72 SW MAWGAN-IN-MENEAGE CHYBILLY FARM, Trelowarren

4/130 Granary

GV II

Granary. Probably early C19. Timber framed, part slate-hung, part rendered. Hipped
dry Delabole slate roof with the slates laid diamond fashion, projecting eaves;
originally with coved cornice.
Rectangular plan carried on staddle stones. 3 bays long, 2 bays wide.
Dome-headed granite staddle stones on tall straight shafts slate-hung south west
(weather) side with 2 glazed 2-light casements, the opposite (north-east) side with
similar openings but the left hand opening louvered. All window openings were
probably originally louvered and with internal wooden shutters.
The left hand (north west) side has central window and the other short side opposite
has central doorway with 2-panel door. The slatehanging and render partly fallen.
Interior close-boarded in elm, the whole structure nailed.
Granaries are rare in West Cornwall and this one is of special interest despite its
damaged state. See also the Granary within kitchen garden walls, Trelowarren qv.
