Cottage in the style of a Swiss chalet. Dated 1862. Built for R.W. Fox.
Weatherboard on timber frame. Dry Delabole slate roof on main part, Spanish slate
roof on probable addition. Deep projecting eaves and verges. Crested and pierced
wooden barge boards to the gable ends. Central brick chimney over original house,
with 6 chimney pots, 3 of which are original octagonal pots.
Plan: Probably 2 rooms (full depth) to the ground floor with 4 chambers above,
partly in the roof space, plus a 2-room-plan probably C20 wing in similar style set
back at right angles on the left, and a C20 lean-to porch on the right. Swiss chalet
style.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Original nearly symmetrical west front gable end with doorway
slightly left of middle. Mid-floor and roof-collar level fretted string courses with
pendants. Ledged door with 2 small lights in the upper part. 3-light casement at
left and right and group of four 2-light casements to middle of gable ends. Windows
have single pane to each light probably replacing original leaded glazing. Date
plaque to middle of gable.
Interior (not inspected) has many original features.
This house is built on the site of a former gazebo of 1790.
