3/112 Kerthen Farmhouse and front garden
- wall

GV II

Farmhouse and front garden wall. C18 extended C19. Stone rubble and possibly cob,
some dressed granite, rendered front wall. Steep Spanish slate roof with gable ends,
the left hand chimney stone rubble with a brick shaft, the right hand chimney over
gable adjoining C19 2 storey farm building with lower pitched scantle slate roof.
Single storey C19 wash house at right angles to left hand side of front with large
axial brick stack.
Plan: now overall L-shape; double depth plan house with kitchen/living room left and
presumably parlour right; cross passage between leading to central dog leg stair
between shallow rear service rooms (the left hand rooms now 1 room). Large barn
added at the right hand and in the circa mid C19 and single storey wash house or
bakehouse built at right angles to the left hand side of the front and extending
farther to the left than the house.
2 storeys. Slightly irregular 3 window north-east front. Roughly central doorway
within C20 porch. Fenestration grouped towards right, ground floor right hand window
wider, probably enlarged. Horned sashes. The wash house front has ledged door and
original casements with small panes.
Interior partly inspected: C18 ovolo moulded beams in left hand room; dog-leg stair
with closed string and column-turned balusters; fielded 3-panel door into parlour and
some 2-panel doors to first floor.
The garden wall is grouted rubble with round-headed granite monolith piers flanking
the gateway and C19 wrought iron gate.
Superficial C20 external alterations but essentially a fairly complete C18 house with
little altered C19 extensions.
