Description

SW 63 SW BREAGE GODOLPHIN

4/51 King's Garden walls, rear yard
(south) walls and attached
buildings

GV II

Walls enclosing the King's Garden at Godolphin House (qv) and those enclosing the
large adjoining yard to the rear of the house including outbuilding with mullioned
windows to the east and roofless piggery. C17, C18, C19 and C20. Granite rubble
with granite dressings, remains of slate roof on outbuilding.
The walls surround 2 adjoining rectangular enclosures; that to the west comprises a
walled garden in association with the King's Room; that to the rear of the house more
irregular and resulting from the demolition of further courtyards and ranges of
buildings in 1804, now serving to enclose an open yard or garden.
The back wall of the stable (qv) forms the north side of the King's Garden. Tile
walls to the south and west probably C17 in origin are about 3 metres high and the
latter joins the west end of the stable. Part way along the south wall is a C17
gateway facing out with chamfered jambs and diagonal stops. The east side of the
garden is formed by part of Godolphin House (qv) comprising the King's Room (with
porch access) and a ruinous wall of the first half of C18 with a large blocked
segmented leaded window, which must once have lit the principal staircase. The
remainder of the east wall is at a lower level than the others and probably dates
from the early C19. It is common to the large yard behind the house and a re-used
C17 chamfered gateway with diagonal stops open off the latter.
The yard south of the house is of more irregular shape and its boundaries are made up
of walls of varying height and date. On its west side to the south of this gate are
the, ruinous remains of a 3 cell C19 piggery, including some re-used stones and with a
narrow yard in front. The land slopes up to the south boundary wall, which is of C19
construction and has a gateway leading into the Cow Yard (qv). On the east side
towards the south-east corner is a deep rectangular latrine pit and nearer the house
a rectangular single storey outhouse mostly of C19 projecting into the yard. Its far
(east) face is of C17 construction with two 3 light mullioned windows. Its original
extent is unknown and it may have had another floor. The discovery of a small part
of 2 brick ovens adjoining it to the south and east may indicate use as a Bakehouse.
Between this building and the main house is a slate roofed rubble wall, L-shaped on
plan and probably of early C19 construction but incorporating a C17 chamfered doorway
with diagonal stops.
These enclosures are important to the setting of Godolphin House (qv). They suggest
the titles of the buildings layout. The south limit of the yard has encroached on the
Cow Yard (qv) and includes the site of the back gate to the house. The Bakehouse
must have been part of a service court off this.
Against the outside (west) face of the west wall of the King's Garden is a raised
cobbled pavement dating perhaps from C17. It rounds the south-west corner and
diverges to connect with the Cow Yard (qv) gate.
