Description

REDRUTH RADNOR
SW 74 SW
6/295
Pump engine house to Michell's
shaft of West Peevor Mine
at SW 706 440
GV
II
Pump engine house to former tin mine, now derelict. Probably c. 1880; altered
and cut down 1966. Uncoursed killas rubble with granite quoins, bob wall of
squared granite in killas bedding, window arches of brick. Rectangular plan on
east-west axis, with bob wall to west. Formerly 3 stages but now only 2; bob
wall has round-headed 2-stage opening divided by a granite lintel, north side has
small round-headed window. Rectangular concrete cap to shaft in front of bob
wall, and high rectangular platform to the left of this. History: mine formerly
worked as West Treleigh Mine, new shaft sunk 1878 following early success of
Wheel Peevor Mine (q.v.), and initially pumped from that mine; closed in 1898
after fall in tin prices (information provided by Mr Justin Brook). Though
detached from the larger site to the east, shares group value with it.
