Winding engine house to Lyle's shaft at SW 688 401

Winding engine house (or "whim") to former tin mine shaft, now derelict. 1880,
for Wheal Basset Mine. Uncoursed rubble with granite quoins, bob wall of
granite blocks, brick arches to openings; now roofless. Rectangular plan on east-
west axis, with bob wall to east. Three stages; round-headed openings, including
driver's window in bob wall and one window to each stage of rear wall. History:
erected when Wheal Basset Mine took over southern half of former North Basset
Mine; also wound from Grace's shaft to the west by ropes along the ground;
ceased operation as winder in 1889, but continued in use driving capstan.
Functional partner to pump house to east (q.v.) and visually also grouped with
West Basset stamps to north (q.v.). Reference: Palmer & Neaverson, op.cit.
