Parish church dedicated to St Clether. Norman origins with circa C15 tower; the
church , excluding the tower, was largely rebuilt in 1865.
Snecked local stone with granite ashlar tower. Slate roof, the nave and chancel in
one and the south aisle with a lean-to roof.
Plan: Nave and chancel, 5 bay south aisle, south porch, west tower and vestry. The
church has a Norman font and three Norman capitals in the south aisle. The main body
of the church was largely rebuilt in 1865 with the exception of the C15 tower.
Exterior: West tower of 3 stages with moulded plinth and strings and battlemented
parapet. Blocked west door with 4-centred roll-moulded granite arch. 3-light
Perpendicular west window and 3-light Perpendicular belfry lights with slate louvers.
The church has one and two-light lancets lighting the nave and south aisle and a 3-
light lancet east window. C19 south porch with possibly reused pointed roll moulded
arch with stiff leaf stylised capitals and round columns. Inner south door with C19
4-centred arch.
Interior: Unplastered walls. C19 arch-braced roof to nave with cusped bracing in
chancel. High chamfered granite depressed 2-centred tower arch on corbelled
brackets. 5-bay south aisle; the first three piers from the west reuse scalloped
capitals from three thick circular Norman piers. The piers appear to have been
rebuilt and the pointed arcade arches are unmoulded. The two bays towards the east
end have a central square pier. C19 furnishings and pulpit with C19 Commandment
boards at east end. Very simple Norman font with round bowl with rim and roughly
round shaft with rope band.
