1556/5/111 TREDETHY COUNTRY HOUSE HOTEL
16-NOV-10
II
Country house of C17 date, possibly on the site of an earlier house. Considerably altered 1892 to the designs of Silvanus Trevail.
MATERIALS: Country house of stone rubble with granite dressings. Double span slate roof with gable ends and canted hipped end to front left. Moulded brick axial and end stacks.
PLAN: The earlier range appears to comprise the rear east side of the main range. The early C17 barrel vaulted ceiling, probably for a principal chamber on the first floor, illustrates the quality of the earlier house. In 1892 the house was extended to the west and across the front of the earlier range forming an overall double depth plan. The entrance to west of centre leads directly into a large hall heated by an axial stack with the two principal rooms to right and left heated by end stacks. The stair to the rear of the hall was inserted in the earlier range, partly piercing the C17 ceiling on the first floor. To the rear of the house was a stable range, now converted to domestic use with a service range to rear right.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys and attic. Asymmetrical 1:3 window front with two storey canted bay windows to right and left; C19 stone porch with pilasters and entablature to left of centre. C19 door in porch with three-light sash to left and sashes in the canted bays to right and left. First floor with pair of sashes above entrance, sash to right and sashes in the canted bays. C20 dormers to attic.
INTERIOR: Complete joinery and fittings of 1892. Open well stair with barley-sugar twist balusters, moulded rail and square newels ornamented with carved lion's heads. Principal chamber of circa early C17 range has a notable barrel vaulted ceiling with moulded ribs, restored floral motifs, finial and moulded cornice. The ceiling was truncated when the stair was inserted in 1892, although the C17 ceiling is believed to continue within the roof space. There are several pieces of late medieval tracery which have been found in the garden, relating to an earlier house.
HISTORY: An early C17 country house, with probable C15 origins considerably extended in 1892 by Silvanus Trevail (1851-1903) for Francis J. Hext Esq. JP. This was previously the seat of the Rev Charles Peters (1690-1774), a Hebrew scholar. During the mid C20 it was home to Prince Chula of Thailand. It is now a country house hotel.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION
The Tredethy Country House Hotel is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* as a good early-C17 evolved country house, possibly on the site of an earlier house
* for the involvement of Silvanus Trevail in the restoration
